The Red Island

by rovdiv

From an island with a monastery to an island with a castle.

Did you know that the first buildings on the red island were constructed in the 6th century?

And by none other than the Benedictines! They built a monastery on the island and lived there until the 12th century. They then left this place and moved on. However, the island did not remain uninhabited for long, as shortly afterwards the Franciscans settled on the island, expanded the monastery and lived there for a full 8 centuries.

In 1890, the knight Georg von Hütterott finally came into the picture. He fell so madly in love with the island couple that he decided to buy them.

After a short time, he transformed the Benedictine monastery into a summer house and eventually extended it into a castle. The Hütterott family had the island planted with exotic plants from all over the world. Some have survived to this day, such as spring onions and asparagus.
