Currency change: Euro instead of Kuna

Now the time has also come in Croatia – the kuna is being replaced by the euro. The exchange rate has been set at 7.53450 kuna per euro.

What does that mean for you?

Now, the rather annoying exchange of euros into kuna and thus also the exchange rate and transaction fees are finally a thing of the past.

If you still have kuna in a drawer at home, you can still use them to pay in Croatia in the first two weeks of January. From January 15, the euro will be the only means of payment in the newest EU country. Croatian commercial banks will continue to exchange remaining stocks until the end of 2023.

Schengen accession

It’s as much a part of a vacation in Croatia as the sun, beach and sea: every summer there are traffic jams at the border to the country, which is one of the most popular destinations for Austrians. But these waiting times for car travelers should be a thing of the past with Schengen accession.

Croatia will join the Schengen Agreement on January 1, 2023. In the Schengen area, which will then include a total of 27 European countries, there will generally be no identity checks at borders. Important: Holidaymakers must still carry a valid passport or ID card.

The changeover will take longer at Croatian airports, where passport controls will not be abolished until March for technical reasons
